The Sting of Kindness When You’re Mad

The woman in the corner store buying lottery tickets takes up all of your time, gambling an entire paycheck while you wait in line to purchase cigarettes that will kill you one day. You wait for her to be finished and then you wait until she has spoken a bunch of nonsense to her friend behind the counter who owns the place and talks to almost everybody who comes in there everyday except you come in there everyday and he doesn’t talk to you. You have gas now. There are bubbles in your blood. You are about to do something serious (probably clench your fist and touch it to your stomach, then clench the other one and put it in your pocket) but all you can do is smile and feel stupid when she turns and gives you a scratch-off ticket and tells you “I hope you win.”
